Help

Welcome to Quills and Ink!

We are a multi-fandom archive and writers (and readers!) community. Our archive accepts different genres of fanfiction, both het and slash, as well as original fiction. Our forum is a place for all members to kick back and have fun. Also to provide authors, both experienced and beginners, the help and support of fellow writers.

Anyone can browse through our archive, but to leave a review you have to be a member. Signing up is easy: first, read the site guidelines , and then register. To sign up at the forum, go here. Please use the same name on both the forum and the archive.

Note from the Fic Panel: The submission guidelines may give the impression that we're intensely picky but there are really very few stories we don't post to the archive. If your spelling's good and your story doesn't center around a plot featuring Gimli performing karaoke at Helm's Deep while Legolas impregnates himself, or a misplaced Earth girl guiding the Fellowship while serenading Boromir with Lifehouse and Coldplay songs, then your story will probably sail on through. If you have questions, drop us a line at submissions@quillsandink.com

Our guidelines can be found here - submission guidelines first.

The site is also the home of Imedhuir, an adult Tolkien/fantasy writers group established by a group of our talented members. This is the original version of the Village, so accept no substitutes. To find out more about Imedhuir, contact the Imedhuir moderators for more information or click here to read the stories . (The majority of the stories contain NC-17 content.)

We hope you will make yourself at home here at Q&I, find new friends, good stories, and interesting conversation. Feel free to contact us at adminsqandi@gmail.com about any problems, suggestions, or just to let us know how you like the site. We'd love to hear from you. Thank you for stopping by our little corner of the internet.

Because we do accept stories with NC-17 content, we cannot allow minors to join the archive or the forum. By creating an account here, you are stating that you are aware of this disclaimer and that you are of legal age in your country.

If you don't see a particular fandom represented here and would like to, just drop us a line at adminsqandi@gmail.com.

Currently our archive and forum are separate, something we hope to have corrected on the next update of the forum software, but in the meantime please sign up in both areas with the same user name. All members are listed as authors, regardless of whether or not they publish stories.

Our site guidelines and submissions guidelines are listed below. Thanks for your interest in Q&I.

ARCHIVE/FORUM GUIDELINES:

The main number one Golden Rule of Quills and Ink is to have fun and enjoy yourself. But because some people have different definitions of enjoyment, we have a few rules. We'll try to keep them as simple and painless as possible.

1. No wank or drama allowed. This means if you have a problem on or with another site, please leave it there, and if you are having private problems with another member(s), please keep those problems private. If you are being harrassed or flamed on the site by another member, please report it to adminsqandi@gmail.com.

2. No flames in either forum posts or story reviews. Constructive criticism is more than welcome. There is a difference between the two.

A thoughtfully worded review that points out areas in your story that could potentially be revised, is considered constructive criticism and not flaming.

3. No rude or hateful responses to con crit reviews. While a review might not be as positive as you would have hoped, if someone took the time to read your story and leave you a review, please accept it in good grace.

4. Any form of plagarism (passing off another author's work as your own or using another author's work, either in part or whole, without giving proper credit) will automatically result in the plagarist's membership being deleted and then being banned from the site.

5. No trolling. Trolling defined as purposefully posting a subject or message for the sole purpose of stirring trouble.

6. Only one member/author name per person. Multiple pseudonyms for writing purposes are fine but please let the admins know.

7. Please watch the teenybopper/internet speak. Everybody uses some, but let's not go overboard. (I'm officially old now - I used the word 'teenybopper'. Next I'll be screaming 'You kids get off my lawn! In my day we had to walk 20 miles to even see a lawn and by god we appreciated it!)

8. Religion and Politics: Please keep any religious/political discussion confined to the Hot Topic area of the forum.

The forums and the archive are moderated 24 hours a day.

Any questions, problems or concerns should be directed to admins@quillsandink.com Please do not contact administrators or moderators via PM, private email or IM. Members may also post problems in the Help&Support section of the forum.

STORY SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:

How do I submit a story?

Glad you asked. Pretty simple. First, register for an account, then go to your account and select "Add new story". The submissions guidelines will come up again, and at the bottom of that page is where you get started. Once you've finished adding your story it will automatically go into a cache for the Submissions Panel. And that's all there is to it.

A word of warning: Efiction no likee Microsoft Word, so when you upload a story if you try to use an HTML file (a doc saved as a web page) from Word, it will totally screw up. Your best bet is the old Cut and Paste. Also, if you use a Mac, contact the admins and we'll give you instructions on how to upload. Efiction no likee Mac either. Ah, the joys of freeware.

Again, guidelines may give the impression that we're intensely picky but there are really very few stories we don't post to the archive. If you have questions, drop us a line at adminsqandi@gmail.com

We do accept: (other than your basic fanfic stories, of course)

R or NC-17 stories, Het and Slash both, which are kept in seperate categories

Poetry

Original Stories and Poetry

RPGs that have been rewritten in proper story form

Humor stories

PWP

Drabbles (either in groups or solo)

We Don't Accept:

Male pregnancy stories.

MSTs (taking someone else's story and inserting comments throughout).

Real Person Fiction. We do host a few stories submitted by members in the past, but are not currently accepting any more RPF.

Song parodies.

Stories featuring underage characters in sexual situations (e.g. Harry Potter). Future fics where those characters are of age are accepted. 16+ is considered of age in most countries.

Specific Submission Guidelines

1. All work must be proof read. Stories must be proof read, either by a beta or the author, and must be spell checked. Stories with numerous grammatical, punctuation, spelling or formatting errors will be returned to the author and may be resubmitted once the errors are corrected.

2. Writing quality. The quality of writing will be taken into consideration only if the style proves to be very unpolished and difficult to read. This - The Elements of Style is a good overall reference for writing style.

3. Fanons We do not accept stories based on fanons which take the characters wildly OOC. Not all fanons are bad, just the ones that butcher the characters' true natures. (Some examples are Evil Denethor, Rapist Thranduil, Wussy Legolas, Whipped Celeborn, Abusive Sirius, Wimp Harry, Wimp Remus... just to name a few.) 'Fluffy' fanon stories are also not accepted (Elrond chasing kittens, Orophin losing his underwear, Harry and Ron giggling about girls - well, okay, maybe Ron...)

4. Alternate Universe/Crossovers Stories must be recognizable as being based on their respective fandoms. Regarding AU, borrowing the characters' names and writing a story completely unrelated to the original fandom isn't alternate universe.

5. No Mary Sues/Avatars. This is a tricky one and unfortunately some of these stories will end up being decided by our fic panel. OFCs/OMCs are NOT automatically Mary Sues. Even some true Mary Sues can be in a well-written story. Our preferred definition of a Mary Sue (borrowed from Kielle) is: Any original or deeply altered character who represents the author's own ego. S/he is a prima donna (usually, but not always badly written) who saps the realism out of the other characters, causing them to act highly OOC, and takes over the plot, bending canon to suit her/his own purposes. Is usually beautiful/handsome beyond compare, has amazing skills and powers that outshine and awe the other canon characters, and can do no wrong.

If you have questions, please sent them to adminsqandi@gmail.com

7. Stories featuring rape, bondage or abuse content. Situations like this can be a powerful dramatic tool when used properly, but we prefer not to archive stories that use these subjects gratuitously will be rejected. For example, if you're using the rape/bondage/abuse element in the story for no apparent reason, or if the raped character somehow ends up liking what's being done to them or viewing the rape as being acceptable and marries the person who raped them, those stories will be declined.

8. Songfics. Songfics in which the focus is on the original writing/story and not on the copyrighted song. The song should accent the story, not dominate it, i.e. there is more song than there is original writing.
